How to Stop the 3AM Critic
Meditation allows us to shift from higher to lower frequency brain waves, which activates different brain centers. Slower wavelengths allow you to spend more time between thoughts, giving you more opportunities to choose which thoughts to invest in and which actions to take. In order to thrive and cultivate optimal performance in any pursuit, we must learn to train our brains and focus our attention. Focusing on the breath is a simple meditation to utilize to begin the shift from Beta or Alpha to the Theta State. Because the breath and the mind work in tandem, as the breath lengthens, the brain waves slow down. It appears that the more you meditate, the better your brain becomes at self-regulation. At rest, you don't have to expend as much energy, and you can more readily achieve a more relaxed condition.
