How to Get Out of a Cranky Mood
Lately, it feels like I've been stuck in a cranky mood. Maybe it's the looming holiday season triggering some old patterns, or perhaps it's the overwhelming to-do list that seems to keep growing—especially with the launch of my new membership site. If you’ve been feeling down or stuck in a funk, let’s work through this together.
You might be wondering, "Why aren’t you taking your own advice, Marisa?" Well, to be honest, sometimes I don’t want to. I find myself riding that wave of self-pity, heading straight into the depths of what I call "Cape Depression." But here’s the thing—I’m not going to let myself stay there. I’ve decided to take my own advice, and I’m here to share with you exactly how I plan to shake off this storm.
Lately, it’s felt like my old emotions and past programs are resurfacing with a vengeance. My body seems to be searching for any excuse to reinforce these negative feelings, and it only takes one thought to spiral downward. But I know this is just a chemical process my body is triggering—and I have the power to change it. I just have to make the decision to do so.
One of the first things I’m going to do is get up and move. I know it’s tough, especially when you’re comfortable on the couch with a plate of pasta and a new season of Criminal Minds queued up. But instead, I’m turning on my favorite song and dancing it out. Moving your body helps to produce serotonin, a neurotransmitter that can help lift your mood and keep those depressing thoughts at bay.
If dancing isn’t your thing, try going for a walk with intention. Just getting the energy flowing can make a world of difference.
After moving, I like to reinforce my mood boost with a mantra. I repeat to myself, "I am light. I am love. I am whole." I keep saying it until it sinks in. This practice helps keep me present, pulling me out of the trance that makes me believe I am my body, my emotions, or my past. These are just old programs from the third dimension, and I’m not going to let them control me.
If all else fails, I find that sitting by a window or getting outside for some sunshine can do wonders. If you’re in a place where sunshine is scarce, sitting by a bright light and imagining yourself on a beach can be just as effective. Remember, sometimes you have to fake it till you make it.
While I don’t usually reach for supplements, I’ve heard that 5-HTP or St. John’s Wort can be helpful for mood improvement. However, it’s important to consult with your healthcare provider first, as these can affect everyone differently.
Another fantastic mood booster is getting a massage. It’s been shown to increase serotonin and dopamine—those feel-good chemicals—and reduce cortisol, the stress hormone. Plus, who really needs an excuse to get a massage?
